Support During Many Stages of Life

Edgar is one of our Indian Creek residents enjoying a comfortable retirement because of the resources we are able to provide for his needs. Many adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities live independently with great success. They may have family or social support to provide extra stability, but they manage very well on their own as they build careers and relationships.

As people get older, though, sometimes new challenges set in. This is when many independent adults find that organizations like Indian Creek are a good fit for the assistance they are beginning to need. This is how Edgar came to be part of our family. He recently shared his story.

From Pennhurst to an Active Lifestyle

Edgar grew up in Norristown, PA and had a tumultuous childhood. At a young age, he was sent to the Pennhurst State Institution under dubious circumstances. It’s a time of his life that he doesn’t like to talk about.

After leaving Pennhurst, Edgar worked at a few different jobs, volunteered for the US Forest Service, and even dressed as Santa Claus during the holidays. He eventually met someone, fell in love, and was married for 18 years. Some of his greatest joys in life involved being a dad to his young daughter and stepfather to his wife’s son. After divorcing, Edgar developed some health issues and began to need more assistance.

Prior to 2009, Edgar was living alone in an apartment in Pottstown. He had an advocate to help him, but his medical issues were becoming more severe, and he needed more care than the advocate could provide. He kept in touch with his daughter, but his family could not provide any support for him. Edgar checked out a few homes and decided that Indian Creek Foundation was the best option to meet his increasing medical issues. Beyond that, the senior services and community activities provided by ICF would allow him to spend more time in the community than when he was on his own.

Transitioning Into Supported Retirement

In 2016, he told us that, “My life has improved since coming to ICF. I get the help I need, the staff are fun, and I enjoy being with them.” Edgar’s house is designed to meet his medical and limited mobility needs. He’s been taking care of himself, and the nursing staff helps him reach his health goals. He even gets to explore hobbies like coloring and painting.

Recently, Edgar mentioned that his current house is the, “best place he’s ever lived.” We’re so glad that Edgar found us when he needed us most.
